How to Convert Unicode to Bamini

  1. Enter your Tamil text Copy Unicode Tamil from a document, website or chat app and paste it into the input box.
  2. Convert the text Click “Convert to Bamini”, or leave auto-convert on to see results as you type.
  3. Copy the result Use “Copy Output” to move the converted text into the application that expects Bamini.
  4. Set the font and check In that application, select the Bamini font and confirm the Tamil renders correctly before you save or print.

Start with a short sample before converting a long document. Legacy encodings cannot carry every formatting detail, so bold text, tables and page layout still have to be redone in the destination application.

What Is Unicode to Bamini Conversion?

Unicode is the international text standard that every modern operating system, browser and phone understands. Tamil written today — on a website, in a chat app, in a spreadsheet — is almost always stored in Unicode, which means the Tamil letters themselves are in the file.

Bamini is a legacy Tamil font encoding that predates that standard. It does not store Tamil letters at all: it stores Latin characters, and the Bamini font file decides how those characters look. The sequence jkpo; therefore means nothing on its own; it becomes தமிழ் only when the Bamini font renders it.

That is the whole reason this converter exists. Changing the font in Word does not change the encoding underneath — pick Bamini for Unicode text and you get a page full of accented Latin letters. You have to transform the text itself, and that is what the tool above does: it maps every Tamil letter to the exact key sequence a Bamini font expects, and the reverse page maps those sequences back.

The mapping is not a simple one-letter swap. Tamil has compound letters, vowel signs that sit before the consonant, vowel signs that sit after it, and vowel signs that surround it on both sides. Bamini also gives some consonants dedicated keys for their ு and ூ forms. The engine handles these cases in a fixed order — ligature, dedicated key, composed key — which is why the same word always converts the same way.

When Should You Use It?

Older Tamil documents

Prepare text for an application or archive that still expects Bamini, or bring an old project into a workflow that has not moved off legacy fonts yet.

Desktop publishing and printing

Some print workflows are built around legacy fonts and page makeup software. Convert the text, then check the final layout — spacing often needs a manual pass.

Moving text between apps

Bridge a modern Unicode app and a font-based one without retyping. Convert a short sample first to confirm the destination application uses the same Bamini version.

Known Limitations

Legacy font encodings are not always fully documented, and different Bamini builds have shipped slightly different mappings. Rather than quietly guessing, here is exactly where this converter stands:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Unicode to Bamini converter free?

Yes. The converter is free, needs no registration and has no usage limit. There is no upload step either: the conversion runs inside your browser.

How do I convert Unicode Tamil text to Bamini?

Paste Unicode Tamil into the left box. The Bamini text appears on the right, and you can copy it or download it as a .txt file. Auto-convert is on by default, so the output updates as you type.

What is the difference between Unicode and Bamini?

Unicode is the universal text standard and stores Tamil as Tamil code points, so every modern app renders it without extra setup. Bamini is a legacy font encoding: it stores Tamil as ordinary Latin characters, which is why the converted text needs the Bamini font installed before it displays as Tamil.

Why does my converted Bamini text look like English gibberish?

That is exactly what it is supposed to look like before the font is applied. jkpo; spells தமிழ், but it only renders as Tamil when the Bamini font is selected in your application. Copy the output into Word, PageMaker or CorelDRAW and set the font to Bamini there — the font download page has the files and the install steps.

Can I convert Bamini text back to Unicode?

Yes. Use the reverse tab at the top of the tool, or open the dedicated Bamini to Unicode Converter, which is a separate page with its own examples and explanation.

How accurate is the conversion?

The engine currently passes all 135 of its 135 test cases, and 127 of those are cross-checked against published Bamini key charts and the Open-Tamil reference tables. We do not claim it is flawless: legacy fonts differ between versions, and a handful of rare clusters are still unverified. The known limitations are listed on this page rather than hidden.
